Should enterprises take another look at Windows Phone?

Windows Phone debuted a little more than 5 years ago. Microsoft came into the market well after several other players had established themselves (read Apple and Blackberry) – and the market’s reception was underwhelming. Fast forward to today and many that have tried to dip their toes into the Windows Phone ecosystem have either given up (this would be the majority) or they are already hardcore fans (a distinct minority).

But a lot has changed in the last five years. Is it time for business users to give the Windows Phone another look?

This past year, Microsoft has made a big point of showcasing its revamping of the Nokia brand and the reemergence of the Windows Phone (with Windows 10 integration). Historically, the biggest complaints users have had are the lack of apps and poor integration with Apple and Google. However, as part of the revamping and reimagining, Microsoft has tried to play nice with the likes of Google and Apple. We’re already seeing Microsoft’s apps and services make their way into the Apple and Google ecosystems, and vice versa. The devices are also starting to look a lot better (see Lumia 950 and 950xl).

For enterprises, features such as remote management, access and tracking are strong differentiators for Windows Phone. Of course, the big feature is Windows 10 – which if you’re a Microsoft Power User, is extremely enticing. The ability to not only use Microsoft apps on the device, but to actually use it more like a PC with increased connectivity is a strong “pro” in the list of pros of cons.

While the device is “a work in progress,” it’s progressed quite a bit since its inception. The competition continues to push Microsoft to offer more to users in order to earn their business and their loyalty. To that end, we’re all benefiting. Let’s see if this device starts to generate “prime time” interest in the market….
